An exceptionally fine Charles II Porringer made in London in 1679 by Francis Singleton.

The Porringer is of a large size and stands on a spreading circular foot. The main body rises to a slightly everted rim and is decorated, on the lower section, with acanthus and palm leaf motifs. The upper section displays a raised horizontal band of diamond motifs on a matted ground. The cast side handles are some of the finest we have seen, displaying a caryatid head and upper body, as well as scrolls and crisp bead work. The front is also engraved with the contemporary initials G*I. The base is also engraved with a second set of contemporary initials which may denote the giver of this piece. The Porringer is in quite excellent condition, with a very good colour, and displays crisp marks on the base. The weight and gauge of the silver is also exceptional. Francis Singleton was a prolific maker during this period and his maker's mark is shown in Jackson's "Silver & Gold Mrks" on page 134. He had workshops in Foster Lane, when this piece was made.
