This very fine example is of a desirable early date and has a deep circular bowl which is pierced with stylised heart shaped motifs. The strainer has two side handles of shaped triangular form, one engraved with a contemporary Crest and one with a cipher. The Bowl displays a full set of hallmarks and the underside of each handle is stamped with the sterling mark. These strainers were used to strain fruit into the punch bowl. Although the use of Britannia standard was not compulsory after 30th May 1720, it is still an authorised alternative standard and the marks are sometimes found in conjunction with date letters between 1720 and the present day.
This piece is in excellent condition, with a good colour and crisp marks and could also be used to strain tea today.
