A very rare pair of early George II Mugs made in London in 1729 by Thomas Mason.
The Mugs stand on an applied circular foot decorated with reeding. The slightly tapering sides have an everted rim and " tucked in" base, the typical design for this period. The plain scroll handles are attached to the main body with oval mouldings and the front of each piece is engraved with a contemporary Crest. The Mugs are in excellent condition, have a good colour and are very well marked in the foot. To find pairs of mugs is extremely rare, however they are exceptionally scarce from this date.It would appear that mugs were an item which Thomas Mason specialised in producing at his workshops located in Sherborn Lane.Height: 3.6 inches, 9cm.Base Diameter: 2.9 inches, 7.25cm.Weight: 16oz.
