A very fine George II Tankard made in London in 1759 by Robert Albin Cox.

The Tankard is of a good substantial size and stands on a stepped circular foot. The baluster main body has an applied reeded girdle around the lower section and the stepped domed cover is also decorated with reeded bands. This example has an attractive scroll handle with heart shaped end, which is attached to the cover with a cast chair back thumb piece. The front of the main body is beautifully engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with the Motto Esse Non Videri below and a Lion rampant Crest above. This is all surrounded by a cartouche of shell details, scrolls and floral and foliate sprays. The Arms are those of the Bore family. The Tankard is in excellent condition, is of a very fine colour and is fully marked on the base and in the cover. Robert Albin Cox was apprentice to Humphrey Payne, a specialist maker of mugs and tankards.
