This very unusual George I Snuff Box is of a slender broad rectangular form. The cover is decorated with two engraved beaded bands and a linear frame. The centre is most unusually engraved with a finely detailed full Armorial, with Crest above, surrounded by a pluming foliate scroll cartouche. The engraving has been executed to the finest standard. The sides are decorated with a raised reeded band and the plain base is engraved with the contemporary conjoined initials ML, surrounded by star motifs. The interior displays pale gilding, a sign of quality of production and a very clear maker's mark of TT. The Armorial is that of the Wylford family and it is unusual to find a full Armorial engraved on a snuff box at this early date. Further research has indicated that this may well be a mark of Thomas Tearle. His work is of the finest quality, as he was apprentice to the very fine silversmith, Gabriel Sleath.
