This is possibly the earliest Decanter Stand we have offered over the years, which stands on three cast scroll feet.  The main body is circular in form and has a raised rim decorated with gadrooning.  The centre is beautifully engraved with a contemporary Armorial with Crest above and motto engraved on a banner below.  This is all surounded by a floral, foliate and Rococo shell detail cartouche.  The underside is very well marked and is engraved with its original scratch weight.

The work of Elizabeth Godfrey is scarce and often of innovative design.  She gained the Royal patronage of H.R.H. The Duke of Cumberland and a copy of her trade card is in the collection of the British Museum.  Elizabeth Godfrey was born into the Huguenot Pantin family and, firstly, married Abraham Buteux, whom she survived to carry on his business before marrying Benjamin Godfrey in the following year.

Diameter: 5.25 inches, 13.13 cm.
