This very fine early Snuff Box is of slender broad rectangular form. The cover is decorated with two engraved beaded bands and a linear frame. The centre is most unusually engraved with a finely detailed full Armorial, with Crest above, surrounded by a pluming foliate scroll cartouche. The engraving has been executed to the finest standard. The sides are decoarted with a raised reeded band and the plain base is engraved with the contemporary conjoined initials ML, surrounded by star motifs. The interior displays fine gilding and a clear maker's mark for Thomas Tearle. It is highly unusual to find a full Armorial, and Crest, being engraved on a Snuff Box at this date. The work of Thomas Tearle is always of the finest stadard, which is not surprising, as he was apprentice to the very fine silversmith, Gabriel Sleath.
