The Spoon is modelled in the Trefid form and the back of the bowl is unusually decorated with lace back designs including beaded scrolls and foliate motifs. The reverse of the stem also displays crisp lacework including raised scrolls, beads and a foliate motif with a Provincial feel to the design. The top of the stem is engraved with the contemporary prick dot initials MC, in addition to unusual spiral designs. The stem is very well marked twice with a shield containing the initials JM, for John Murch. The other two punches, accompanying the makers mark, are the sterling mark struck in two halves. The spoon is in excellent condition and has a fine colour.



Spoons from Plymouth are especially rare. John Murch was apprentice to Thomas Cory of London and Warminster and was free by 1691.
