The Argyle is modelled in the rare side handled "Drum" form and displays a gadrooned base. This example has a beautiful slender spout and wicker bound side handle. The hinged cover has a gadrooned rim and the slightly domed cover terminates in a stylised artichoke finial. This piece has an outer hot water jacket, to keep the contents hot, and can be filled from a side sparrow beak section, with hinged cover. This piece is of the rare side handled design and the front of the main body displays a contemporary Armorial above a banner engraved with the Motto "Dux Vilae Ratio." The cover and base are also engraved with a contemporary Crest. The Arms and Crest are those of the Freer family of Stratford Upon Avon. The Crest engraved on the base is that of a member of the Pawson family, which probably relates to the giver of this piece.

The Argyle is in excellent condition and is of the finest quality, which is no surprise when one considers the maker, Andrew Fogelberg. The greatest British silversmith of all time, Paul Storr, was apprentice to Andrew Fogelberg and, as such, pieces from the Fogelberg workshops are desirable and of the finest quality. The Argyle is fully marked on the base and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the cover.

Argyles are generally accepted to have been containers for gravy or sauce, the design incorporating some form of heat preserving element. The credit for inventing these pieces goes to the 3rd Duke of Argyll, as he and his Duchess became tired of their sauces arriving cold at the dining table at Inverary Castle. Their greatest period of popularity was from 1765-1820. This design usually bears the mark of Fogelberg, so we may conclude that it was one which he produced in his workshops, although very few were ever made.
