This very fine Serving Dish has a raised rim with a shaped bold gadrooned rim decoarted with Rococo shells flanked by acanthus foliage. The rim of the dish is engraved with an unusual Crest and the reverse is very well marked, as well as being engraved with STORR & MORTIMER.
The Crest is that of the Hardy family of Toller Whelme, a hamlet in the parish of Coscombe, near Dorchester, co. Dorset. The family was seated at Toller Whelme in the 16th century and one of them founded Dorchester Grammar School at the end of that century. Nelsons Captain, Kiss Me Hardy, later Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy Baronet, was a descendent of a younger son. Thomas Hardy, born 1750, had two sons, Henry born 1799 and Charhes born in 1800. It is reasonable to assume that the Crest is that of the eldest son, Henry. Their impressive manor house of early origins, with 18th century additions, still survives today.
