HESTER BATEMAN. A very rare pair of George III Neo Classical Wine Coasters made in London in 1784 by Hester Bateman

Sold

The Wine Coasters are circular in form with a spreading base and beaded rim.  The sides are pierced with two horizontal bands of scroll design, as well as Neo Classical urns in oval frames.  The sides are also engraved with crisp bluebell garlands and wavy prick dot bands.  The front also displays a circular bright cut cartouche containing a contemporary Crest.  Each has its original fruitwood base with a central boss.  The coasters are fully marked on the edge of the base and the marks include the incuse duty mark, where the King's Head is contained within a cut cornered punch.  This was only seen in 1784 and 1785.

Hester Bateman made very few coasters during her career and this is only the third pair we have offered over the years.  Each is in excellent condition.

Height: 1.5 inches, 3.75cm.
