The Salver stands on four cast scroll panel feet decorated with fluting. The main body is of a good large size and displays a raised rim decorated with a double beaded band. The centre is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest above, all contained within an oval blue bell drop cartouche. The Arms and Crest are those of Jenkyns, impaling Banister for the Reverend John Jenkyns 1753-1824, vicar of Evercreech, co. Somerset, and his wife Jane Banister. He came from a long line of West Country Clergymen. John and Jane had a distinguished son, The Reverend Richard Jenkyns, DD, Master of Balliol College Oxford, Vice Chancellor of the University and, 1845, Dean of Wells. He was born in 1782, became a Fellow of Balliol, 1802, and Master in 1819. He was instigator of open competition for scholarships and raised Balliol intellectually to the first rank in Oxford Colleges. He retained both the Mastership and the post of Dean of Wells until his death in 1854.
The Salver is in excellent condition, is of a good weight and has an excellent colour. It is also very well marked on the reverse and the engraving of the Armorial is finely executed.
