The Basket stands on a rectangular foot decorated with reeding.  The main body has a deep bowl, decorated with a wide band of lobing.  The sides rise to a shaped, stepped, rim decorated with raying shells, palms, flower heads and acanthus foliage.  The beautiful, shaped, side handles are also decorated with shells, gadrooning and acanthus foliage.  The basket is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the top edge.

Scottish Table Baskets of this design are very rare, as the majority are English.  This piece is a wonderful example which could be used for bread, fruit or cake on the table, as well as being a beautiful, decorative, item when not in use.
