The Wine Coasters are circular in form with a reeded protruding base. The deep sides rise to an everted rim decorated with gadrooning and are very unusually pierced and engraved with trailing, fruiting, vines and pluming scrolls. Each has a turned fruitwood base which are centred with a silver disc boss engraved with a contemporary "Lion Rampant" Crest. Both are in quite excellent condition and are very well marked. This design of wine coaster often bears the mark of William Allen III. His only mark was registered on 10th August, 1798 and he occupied workshops at 35 Noble Street, when these pieces were made.
