A fine & unusual set of four George III Chamber Candlesticks made in London in 1808 by William Fountain.

The Chambersticks unusually have a square base, rather than the more usual circular style. The outside border is decorated with gadrooning and anthemion motifs, in addition to Rococo shells. The main shaft rises to a square socket decorated with scallop shells flanked by acanthus foliage. The detachable nozzles are decorated with a border identical to the base. The conical extinguisher is decorated with gadrooning and terminates in an acorn finial. This is attached to the side handle which displays a scallop shell motif. The Chambersticks are fully marked on the base, nozzles and extinguisher. As you will appreciate, it is most unusual to find a complete set of four chambersticks, whose design is certainly influenced by those of Paul Storr. William Fountain was for some time partner of Daniel Pontifex, a very fine quality maker, who enjoyed the patronage of George III.
