The Candlesticks are cast and stand on a circular, domed, base decorated with a band of foliate motifs below a beaded band. The baluster shaped stem is decorated with acanthus spears bound with beading, as well as reed and tie borders. The stem rises to a tulip shaped socket, also decorated with acanthus spears. The top displays a beaded band, as does the rim of each detachable nozzle. The base is engraved with a contemporary Armorial with Classical garlands above and tied crossed branches below. The reverse is engraved with a Crest below the coronet of a Viscount. The Candlesticks are of the finest quality and are in excellent condition . Both are fully marked on the bases, in addition to being engraved with their original scratch weight. The nozzles are marked with the maker's mark and sterling mark. The work of John Schofield & Robert Jones does not appear often, however is always of the finest quality, especially candlesticks which bear their mark. They were in partnership 1776-1778, having workshops at 40, Bartholomew Close.
The arms are those of Greville and the crest is that of the Upton family, Viscountcy of Templetown. John Upton, 1st Viscount Templetown (1771-1846), was created Baron Templeton in 1785 and Viscount Templetown in 1806. He was the son of Clotworthy Upton, 1st Baron Templetown (d. 1785) by Elizabeth Boughton, daughter of Shuckburgh Boughton of Poston Court and his wife Mary Greville (daughter of Hon. Algernon Greville and grand daughter of Fulke Greville 5th Baron Brooke) .
It seems likely therefore that these candlesticks were made for a member of the Greville family and inherited by the 1st Viscount Upton. The arms could be those of the 1st Viscount's maternal great Uncle Fulke Greville (1717-1805) who married Frances Macartney in the 1740s and served as MP for Monmouth between 1747 and 1752. He also served as British Envoy Extraordinary to Bavaria between 1764 and 1770.
