The Spoon is modelled in the Hanoverian Rat Tail design. The top of the stem is engraved with a set of contemporary scratch engraved initials and the front with the inscription Nathan Mather 1756 Jane (Hill) his wife died 1777. The stem is marked twice with the makers mark of TM, with a crown above and star below, and the Sterling mark in a shield. This mark has been variously attributed over the years. It is mentioned in the 1984 Grosvenor Museum/Sothebys Exhibition Catalogue on page 110 and it would appear that this Sterling Mark was being used as a type of control mark in Liverpool between circa 1701 and 1735. Recent research has concluded that it is most probably that of Thomas Mosley of Liverpool. J.H. Bourdon-Smith offered two similar rat tail spoons with the same marks in 1983. Our research has also uncovered two other rat tail spoons and a mug, with these marks. Work by this maker is extremely rare and seldom comes onto the market.
