An extremely rare George II Coconut Cup and Cover made in Dublin circa 1740.

The Coconut Cup stands on three detailed cast, textured lion paw feet which are attached to the coconut with beautiful shaped disc mouldings with scroll borders. The Cup has a silver rim, with scalloped edge, engraved with a contemporary Crest and two detailed scroll handles. The domed pull off cover has a shaped rim and terminates in a very unusual cast finial, decorated with flower heads. The Cup is in excellent condition and is marked with the Hibernia on one handle and the Crowned harp on the other handle. Two of the disc mouldings are also marked with the Hibernia. As you will appreciate, it is quite usual not to find a makers mark on Irish silver of this date. These covered cups would have been used as table ornaments and are not used like the more usual silver mounted coconut drinking cups. This is the first time we have seen an Irish example and cannot find any illustrated in our library. The quality of design and production is quite exceptional.
