The box is of a wide escutcheon form with three flush hinged covers, the three interior compartments were for three different types of Snuff.  The hinged covers are decorated with exceptional engraving displaying ropework borders.  The hinge is finely concealed with shell and star engraved motifs below a band of foliate scroll work and trellis designs.  The sides and base are plain in design and this piece is in quite outstanding condition.  The quality of production and decoration is exceptional, as the engraving has been executed to the highest standard and this would have been a very difficult piece to make.  Although unmarked, this was almost certainly made in London and the style of engraving is English and circa 1720. Double Snuff Boxes are rare, however we only know of one other triple snuff box which was contained in the important "Lion Collection of British Silver Boxes" and which is illustrated on page 120 of the catalogue of the collection.
