The Bodkin is of typical form, with ear scoop at the end, and is engraved in the typical naive early style with zig zag designs and a central flower head. This piece is also engraved with the contemporary initials of the original owner, these being FB. The bodkin is in exceptional condition and also bears a maker's mark. The main function of the Bodkin was to thread bands of yarn through all items of clothing. The ribbon, or cord, was threaded through the rectangular slit and the small eye was used to hang it up. The small hollow at the terminal was used to pick earwax out of the ear which was then used to facilitate the smooth running of the thread.
Length: 4.1 inches.
