The Creamboat is modelled in a very rare design and is of shaped oval form, with baluster sides and an everted rim. The main body stands on three cast shell feet, with scroll legs attached to the main body with very unusual female mask mouldings. This piece has a leaf capped bi-furcated scroll handle and the underside of the rim is very unusually chased with Rococo designs including, shell details, scrolls and trellis work. The base is very well marked and is also engraved with its original scratch weight. The side of the body is engraved with a double Crest, one with Motto above, and all surmounted with the Coronet of an Earl. This piece is in excellent condition and is of a good weight.
The crests are those associated with the augmented arms of Major General and later Field Marshall John BYNG (1772-1860) of Wortham Park, Barnet, Middlesex. He was an army officer of some considerable repute. Notably he was a Commander during the Peninsular war and later at the Battle of Waterloo. In 1815 he was granted an augmentation to his existing arms by the Prince Regent, which included the colour of the 31st Regiment of Foot, in recognition of his heroic action at the Battle of Nive. He was created in 1835 Baron of Strafford and in 1847 Viscount Enfield and Earl of Strafford.
John Montgomery was a quality silversmith who was apprenticed to Samuel Lewis 26th August, 1708 and was free 8th March 1716. His first mark was entered in March 1718 and he occupied workshops on the corner of Silver Street, Golden Square, when this piece was made. This was formerly in the Sauce and Creamboat Collection of Dr Christine & James Chance, some of which were bequeathed to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, after their death.
