YORK. A very rare George III Racing Prize Goblet made in York in 1789 by Hampston & Prince.

The Goblet stands on a stepped circular pedestal foot decorated with prick dot roundels and a band of arrow head motifs. The vase shaped main body is engraved with a lower band of acanthus spears and an upper band of roundels and arrow heads. The front is engraved with Ayton, which is almost certainly the name of the horse and the reverse with the initials RBM engraved in script lettering. The initials are almost certainly those of the owner of the winning horse Ayton. The Goblet is in excellent condition and is fully marked in the foot.
