The Vinaigrette is from the very rare Matthew Linwood engraved countryside series. This example is broad rectangular in form and the cover displays one of the rarest subjects from the series, this being "The Woodcutter". The engraving depicts a woodcutter in period costume smoking a clay pipe with an axe under his arms and a loyal dog at his feet. This is all set within a rural landscape. The sides are engraved with prick dot bands and the base with an oval cartouche. The cover opens up to reveal a finely gilded interior and one of Linwood's trademark cast grilles, depicting a wicker basket of fruit surrounded by pluming scrollwork. The box is in excellent condition and is very well marked.
