An exceptionally rare George IV "Lyre" Scottish Lemon Strainer made in Glasgow in 1825 by Robert Gray & Sons.

This beautiful Strainer was for use on a punch bowl and displays a deep oval bowl pierced with plain roundels. The raised rim is decorated with tonge and dart design and each handle is beautifully modelled as a lyre, which was a design used by Robert Gray. The handles are attached to the main body with raying shell mouldings and the reverse display pins, so that it could be secured to the punch bowl, which is a fine attention to detail and very unusual feature. This piece was formerly exhibited at the Colonial Williamsburg Collection for over twenty years. These strainers are exceptionally rare, especially being made in Glasgow. They are nearly always from the workshops of Robert Gray & Son, referred to as "The Paul Storr of the North."
