Peter & Ann Bateman. An extremely rare George III Pocket Nutmeg Grater made in London in 1796.

The Nutmeg Grater is oval in form with a reeded edge at the top and bottom of the box. The top is beautifully engraved with an outer wriggle work band on a scratch engraved ground, surrounded by prick dot bands. The box opens up to reveal a steel grater and the base also opens to reveal the compartment for storing the Nutmeg. This example is in excellent condition and is well marked on the cover, base and side.

The Bateman family were one of the most famous silversmithing dynasties in England at the end of the Eighteenth century and Nutmeg Graters from their workshops are extremely rare, as very few were made. They are very desirable to collectors within this area.
