KENILWORTH CASTLE. A fine Castle Top Vinaigrette made in Birmingham in 1839 by Gervase Wheeler.
182417
The Vinaigrette is broad rectangular in form and the base and sides are decorated with engine turned designs. The base also displays a vacant shield shaped cartouche. The cover displays a crisp raised view of the ruins of Kenilworth Castle, one of Englands strongest castles which proved impregnable in the siege of 1266. Famously it was the home of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester from 1563, a gift from Queen Elizabeth I. The interior displays a grille pierced and engraved with pluming foliate scrolls.
