John Obrisset. A rare Queen Anne silver & tortoiseshell Snuff Box. Made by John Obrisset in London circa 1705.

The box is oval in form with a tortoiseshell base, silver sides and hinge. The cover is inset with a detailed pressed tortoiseshell portrait in profile of Queen Anne. The top is signed OB for John Obrisset, who was of Huguenot descent, and a specialist carver and medalist. He worked in silver, horn and tortoiseshell and specialised in Snuff Boxes with portraits in relief. Examples of this specific box are contained within the Royal Collection and the Victoria & Albert Museum. A near identical piece is shown on page 108 of British Silver Boxes 1640-1840, The Lion Collection. As well as being signed, the box is also unusually dated 1705.
