This very rare pint mug stands on a stepped, spreading, circular foot which is decorated with reeding. The main body has an attractive baluster design, which rises to an everted rim. The scroll handle is decorated with leaf capping and displays oval mouldings where it is attached to the main body. The front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, surrounded by a beautifully engraved cartouche of crossed floral and foliate sprays. The Arms are those of the ancient Popham family of Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight. The Mug is in quite excellent condition and displays a full set of hallmarks in the foot. This is a rare item to find from Hester's workshops and examples are shown in the Hester Bateman book by David Shure, also dated 1790. This is only one of a handful which we have offered over the years and it would be a rare addition to any collection of Hester Bateman silver. This would have been one of the last items which Hester made, as she retired in 1790.
