HESTER BATEMAN. A very rare pair of George III Wine Coasters made in London in 1788 by Hester Bateman.

The Wine Coasters are circular in form, with a stepped base and beaded rim. The sides are pierced with two bands of vitruvian scrolls, as well as vertical pails and Neo Classical urns in ovals. The piercing is also surrounded by prick dot designs and bands. The Coasters have their original turned wooden bases, one displaying most unusual natural shading. The front of each piece also displays a square cartouche, engraved with a contemporary Crest. Both Coasters are in quite excellent condition and are fully marked on each base. Wine Coasters are rare from the Bateman workshops and these are of a particularly fine gauge of silver.

Height: 1.3 inches, 3.25cm.

Diameter at the rim: 4.65 inches, 11.63cm
