HESTER BATEMAN - A very rare George III Tea Vase made in London in 1780 by Hester Bateman.

The vase stands on a circular pedestal foot which is decorated with beading and a reeded band. The Neo-Classical vase shaped main body has a beaded rim and the shaped pull-off cover has a domed upper section, which terminates in an acorn finial. The cover is also decorated with an applied beaded band. The front of the main body is engraved with a bright cut oval cartouche containing a set of contemporary script initials, with a bird Crest above. The same Crest is engraved on the cover. The bird is, in heraldic terms a Martin, and the Crest is that as used by the Martin family and the last engraved initial is M.
