An important George II Gold Mounted Hardstone Etui made in London Circa 1740.

The Etui has a tapering rectangular form and displays shaded agate panel sides. The front and reverse have gold mounts chased with scrolls and outer bands of foliate motifs. The side panels are chased with Rococo shells and scrolls, in addition to floral sprays. The gold base and cover are decorated with scrolls and shells and the cover also displays a shaped oval suspensory ring. The thumb piece is inset with a diamond and, when pressed, releases the hinged cover to reveal the gold lined, fitted, interior containing five implements, including a ribbed gold pencil, gold bodkin, pair of scissors with gold finger rings, pair of tweezers with gold grips and a folding gold knife chased on both sides with foliate and linear bands, in addition to floral panels. It is most unusual to find an etui in such outstanding condition, from this early date, and with a complete interior.
