This exceptionally rare piece has a deep rectangular form and stands on four bracket feet. The sides, cover and base are covered in shagreen and display four horizontal girdle bands. The cover has a most beautifully made handle and the front displays an exquisite clasp to keep the casket shut. The hinges are also a work of art and are decorated with scroll work.. The cover opens up to reveal a fitted interior with six compartments all lined with original red velvet. Each compartment contains a facetted glass scent bottle with circular hinged silver cover and mounts, Once opened each bottle reveals a glass bottle stopper. This important piece must have been a special commission for the wealthiest of individuals to carry different types of scents around when travelling. Its condition is quite exceptional and is probably the most important example of its type we have every offered. It must have been the finest of workshops in which this casket was made as the attention to detail is also exceptional.
