CHARLES II. An extremely rare cast Pommander made circa 1670.

The Pommander is cast and spherical in form. The top fastener unscrews, so that the pommander opens up into two halves and can then be filled with sweet smelling substances. The exterior displays a central ropework band and early scroll designs surrounded by linear engraving. These pieces would have been hung on the inside and outside of clothing to provide an early form of perfume. This piece is in excellent condition and is an extremely rare survivor. They were the forerummers to the Vinaigrette which would become popular at the start of the 19th century.
