The vase stands on three hoof feet which are held together with a horizontal band decorated with Greek key designs and flower heads in ovals.  The legs rise to very detailed and crisp rams head masks, above acanthus foliage and entwined bands.  The main body is pierced with vertical pails and decorated with applied beaded bands, tied drapery swags and floral medallions.  The bottom of the vase displays a wide band of acanthus spears. This piece is fully marked on the base, is in excellent condition and has a blue glass liner.

This type of vase, from the true Adam period, are extremely rare and we are sure that the design was directly influenced from the design books of Robert Adam.  We have only ever seen one other example over all of our dealing years.  A similar example is housed within the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, such is its unusual nature.  The V & A example was also made in 1777 by Aldridge and Green and is illustrated in “Adam Silver” by Robert Rowe, Plate 75A, the extract of which is attached.

Height: 5.1 inches, 12.75 cm.

Diameter at the rim: 4.65 inches, 11.63.

Weight: 11oz.
