The raised circular body has straight sides which are slightly everted at the rim. The body is soldered to a circular flared foot and this piece displays two cast "S" scroll handles decorated with beading and leaf capping, typical of the 1650's. The main body is divided into six panels by a punch bead horizontal framed and vertical matted divisions. The front and rear central panels display an oval vacant cartouche surrounded by scroll work. The other four panels display stylised tulips, also surrounded by a matted scroll work frame. The Bowl is in quite exceptional condition and is fully marked on the side of the main body.

During the Commonwealth period 1649-1660, when the Monarchy was abolished the country was used the Puritanical rule of Oliver Cromwell. The Cataclysm of the Commonwealth saw the destruction of the vast majority of the nation's silver and the production of large, decorated, silver was very much looked down upon and largely forbidden. The appearance of tulips was almost certainly a veiled reference to King Charles II, who was in exile during this period in Holland, until the Monarchy was restored in 1660.
