The Spoon is modelled in the Trefid style and the reverse of the bowl is decorated with some of the finest lacework we have seen over the years. The interior of the rat tail is unusually decoarated with lacework and is also flanked by a beaded bands. The reverse of the bowl is decorated with scroll work, flower heads and further unusual beaded bands. The top of the reverse of the spoon is engraved with the contemporary initials P*B. The front of the stem is also decorated with lace work designs, as well as the unusual beading. This example is very well marked, has a good colour and good bowl. It is thought that the maker EH, with a crown above, is that of Edward Hubbald, apprentice to Jeremy Johnson in 1652, or Edward Harrison, apprentice to James Lapley in 1669. Certainly he appears to have been a specialist spoon maker of skill. See page 49, London Silver Spoonmakers 1500-1697 by T.A. Kent.
