An extremely rare & unusual George III antique silver Bread Basket made in Sheffield in 1806 by Nathaniel Smith & Company.
176184
The Basket has a solid plain stepped base which rises to very unusual diamond shaped wire work sides. The swing handle is also pierced and displays a vacant cut cornered cartouche. The basket is very well made, as when the handle is pushed down it perfectly fits into a space, so it is not seen. The base of the basket is engraved with a contemporary Crest and the base and handle are both well marked. This example is of a good gauge and weight and is of the finest quality in terms of design and production. Unusual bread baskets were made in Sheffield at this date, however this is the first time we have ever seen this very rare design.
