An extremely rare pair of George III Neo Classical Ionic Column Candlesticks made in Sheffield in 1773 by Samuel Roberts.

The Candlesticks are modelled as Ionic Columns and the square bases are decorated with two bands of gadrooning. The fluted columns rise to an ionic top and the pull-off nozzles, have incuse sides decorated with gadrooning. The most unusual feature is that the bases are also decorated with three Neo-Classical male portrait medallions, taken from the Antique, surrounded by a tied ribbon cartouche. One side of the base also displays an oval disc shaped cartouche, with ribbons above, engraved with a contemporary Crest. This is the first time we have seen this unusual Neo-Classical design. The Candlesticks are in excellecnt condition and are loaded with mahogany, which is always a sign of quality of manufacture. They are both well marked and incidentally they were made in the first year the Assay Office opened in Sheffield, therefore they represent a rare early example from this centre. Sheffield was known for its innovative, high, Neo-Classical designs during the 1770s.
