An extremely rare George III Bougie Box made in Sheffield in 1782 by Tudor & Leader.
310089
The Bougie Box is of circular drum form with a beaded rim and base. This example displays a very unusual beaded loop carrying handle. The detachable cover has a bright cut rim and the reeded conical extinguisher is attached to the side of the main body with a suspensory chain. The box is fully marked on the main body, with the makers mark, town mark and date letter on the extinguisher and with the makers mark on the cover. It is extremely unusual to find Bougie boxes coming from Sheffield, especially so early after the Assay office was established.
