AN extremely fine & very rare William & Mary Teardrop Nutmeg Grater made in London circa 1690, Makers Mark of GF.

SOLD

301922
The Nutmeg Grater is modelled in the rare Teardrop form with top and bottom openings. The base is plian in design and the sides decorated with linear bands. The cover is beautifully engraved with three tulip sprigs, in a tear drop frame and the contemporary initials DW. It is most unusual to find these graters engraved in this manner. The tulip motif became popular during this period, as William of Orange had taken the throne of England, as William III, with his wife Queen Mary II.
