An extremely fine & unusual pair of George III Candlesticks made in Sheffield in 1775 by John Winter & Company.

The Candlesticks have a stepped circular base, decorated with two beaded bands. The tapering columns, and tulip shaped sockets, are decorated with alternate vertical bands of beading and flat fluting. This is the first time we have seen this very unusual design. The pull-off nozzles have a beaded rim and the Candlesticks are fully marked on the bases and also on the nozzles. Both have wood loaded bases. The Sheffiled Assay Office, was established in 1773, therefore these Candlesticks represent a rare early example of Sheffiled silversmithing, soon after the Office was established.
