A very rare George III Papier Mache Snuff Box, modelled as a book, and made for a Lady, most probably in Exeter circa 1817.

The Snuff Box is realistically modelled as a leather bound book, with silver clasp and gilded leaves. The cover and base display an outer border of scrolls and ovals and the name Ann Richards, Exeter, 1817. The spine is decorated with linear bands and raying roundels. The attention to detail is exceptional, as the inside has also been marbled, as is seen on Georgian books. The box is in quite excellent original condition. Although it is known that ladies took snuff, this is the first time we have seen a snuff box which we definitely know belonged to a Lady.
