This very rare piece has a semi-circular form, with gadrooned border, and an arched handle for hanging up, which is unusually decorated with a Rococo raying shell, flanked by acanthus foliage. The hinged bottom opens to reveal the space where the nutmegs would have been kept. Kitchen Nutmeg Graters are extremely rare and are usually made by John Reilly or Phipps & Robinson. The steel grater is pierced with roundels of different sizes. As you will appreciate, it would have been the grandest houses who would have had a silver nutmeg grater in their kitchens.
