The Candlesticks stand on a stepped shaped base decorated with reeding which rises to a circular sunken well. The attractive baluster stems are decorated with reeding and stylised shells on the shoulders, as well as reeded girdles, on the spool shaped sockets. The base is engraved with an unusual contemporary Crest. The Candlesticks are in excellent condition, with very crisp marks, and both pieces have a good colour. John Cafe was an important maker of candlesticks of fine quality, in terms of design and execution, at this date. The Cafe family had a monopoly in London during this period for the production of Candlesticks and their workshops were located in Carey Lane in the City when this particular pair were made.
