The Candlesticks stand on a stepped base with incuse corners. The bases have sunken central wells and rise to octagonal baluster shaped stems decorated with reeding. The spool shaped sockets display a central girdle and both pieces are fully marked in the foot. The candlesticks are in excellent condition and are of a good colour. James Gould was a specialist Candlestick maker of fine quality. His brother, William, was apprentice to him and his masterpiece is recognised as the Knesworth Chandelier in the Fishmongers Company, made in 1752.
