A rare pair of George III Neo Classical Candlesticks made in Sheffield in 1775 by John Winter & Company.

The Candlesticks are modelled as Corinthian Columns and the square bases are decorated with two bands of beading. The fluted columns rise to the Corinthian top and the pull off nozzles have incuse sides decorated with beading. The bases are most beautifully decorated with laurel leaf swags, tied with rosettes, and very finely detailed Neo Classical urn motifs. One side also displays an oval disc cartouche engraved with a unicorn Crest. The candlesticks are very well marked and are loaded with mahogany, which is always a sign of quality of manufacture. The Candlesticks were made only three years after the Sheffield Assay Office opened, therefore they represent an early example from this centre. Sheffield was known for its innovative, high, Neo Classical designs during the 1770s.
