A rare George III Silver Mounted Tortoiseshell Tobacco Box made most probably in London circa 1780.
204904
The Tobacco Box is oval in form and the silver sides are decorated with reeding. The hinged cover and base are inset with a beautifully shaded tortoise shell panel and the cover is set with an oval disc cartouche engraved with St Andrew with the Saltire cross, above 42 and a crossed thistle and rose sprig. This is all above 42nd Highlanders. The box is in quite excellent condition and is a rare survivor from this period. This was obviously used by a member of the 42nd Highlanders Regiment while on campaign.
