A Charles II Tortoiseshell Pique Squeezie Spice Box made circa 1680
120676
This very rare box was made most probably in London circa 1680 and is oval in form with silver sides and mounts. The cover is inset with a slightly domed piece of tortoiseshell which is inlaid with naive beaded designs and scroll work - the first time we have seen this particular design. The cover has a silver back which is seen when the box is opened by pinching the sides to release the catch mechanism. The base is also made of tortoiseshell. This is the first time we have seen a tortoiseshell squeezie box, especially decorated in this fashion.
